AND UPDATES
1. PAVIA DAY SPA TO BE FEATURED IN UPCOMING LOS GATOS WEEKENDER: If any of you happen to think of it, check us out in the Nov. 2nd edition of the Los Gatos Weekender. I believe our all-organic, ingestible facials are going to be featured by Lifestyle editor Mandy Major. And if you pick up any extra copies, I would love to have one!
2. PROMOTIONAL OFFER FROM BRIAN GRANT PATERSON FOR PAVIA CLIENTS: Here is a wonderful opportunity for you all: a talented "realist" artist in the Bay Area, Brian Grant Paterson, has agreed to extend all Pavia clients a 30% discount on a commissioned head & shoulders charcoal portrait! This is a great gift idea for the holidays, especially for artistically capturing loved ones and family members for posterity's sake. Normally $1,500, Brian is allowing Pavia clients to take advantage of a $450 discount through the end of 2007 (that's big savings!). Please mention the Pavia 30% offer when you call him to commission your portrait. Click on the thumbnail below to see some more of Brian's work (he also does color portraits, still-life, and figures):

3. NEW BLOG: I've updated my blog...you can click "Confessions of a Day Spa Owner" to read all about my ups and downs of owning a day spa.
PAVIA-POTHECARY TIP OF THE MONTH: WHAT IS A NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR?
If you are looking for safe and effective natural health care, then a naturopathic doctor may be just the provider for you. Think of a naturopath as having a Master's degree in Nutrition, Botanical Medicine, and Homeopathy. They use holistic and non-toxic approaches to therapy with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and maintaining wellness on a day-to-day basis. Like conventional doctors, they attend four years of graduate-level naturopathic medical school, where they are educated in all the same basic sciences as MDs. In addition, they complete training in such disciplines as clinical nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, psychology, and counseling.

Probably the most significant distinction between an M.D. and an N.D. is this: An M.D. will diagnose and treat the symptoms of a patient using primarily surgery or pharmaceutical drugs as his/her tools, while an N.D. will diagnose and treat the whole person, looking for the underlying cause of the symptoms. And, of course, the N.D.'s "toolbox" consists of a variety of natural therappies.
A naturopathic physician is licensed by the state or jurisdiction as a primary care general practice physician. As of 2005, naturopathic physicians gained licensure in the state of California and currently, there are 215 N.D.s practicing in this state.
When should you see a Naturopath?
- When you don't really know what is wrong with you. An N.D. is frequently a better detective in figuring out "what is wrong with you" than an M.D. because of their in-depth approach. Usually, an N.D. will spend about 90 minutes with you during your first visit, taking a detailed health history and gathering information about your lifestyle and other factors contributing to your health concerns. In this way, an N.D. creates a highly personalized and customized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
- When you are confused about what supplements you should be taking. Yes, a lot of the herbal information out there can be hard to digest, especially since we are given conflicting information. A case in point is that on the one hand, we are told by MDs that there is really no clinical support for taking herbs to bolster our health, whereas the natural vitamin stores and herbal pharmacies in the world will vehemently disagree. Seeing an N.D. can not only clear this up, but also help you figure out what herbs are right for you.
- When you have vague complaints that don't make you ill enough to see an MD or take drugs. Just as we said above, and N.D. is a good detective and can help you uncover the underlying cause of your complaints, however vague.
- When you are concerned about the long-term impact and side effects of taking drugs, or if the side-effects of the drugs you are taking may be worse than your original problem. Your N.D. can work with your M.D. to suggest helpful and natural alternatives to conventional drugs when treating you. N.D.s are highly motivated to work with your primary care physician and specialist doctors - they feel that this is an important part of taking care of their patients' overall health.
- When you have a chronic health condition that baffles conventional specialists. Often times, people will go see an N.D. when traditional health therapies have not worked for them. Naturopaths have enjoyed success in treating such chronic conditions as diabetes, thyroid disease, gastric and intestinal upsets, hormone imbalances, allergies, and auto-immune diseases.
- And finally, if you just want to be in charge of the way you feel and heal! Generally, seeing an N.D. is a good idea if you want to experience more energy, less pain, better sleep, better digestion, and a better sex life. If you want better overall quality of life and to take control of your health, you should seriously consider seeing a naturopath.
Naturopaths in Our Area
I took time this last month to research naturopathic physicians in the area and I have found three that I really like: Dr. Connie Hernandez of Palo Alto, Dr. Renee Young of Los Gatos, and Dr. Denise Tarasuk of Campbell. Both Drs. Hernandez and Young focus on women's health care, while Dr. Tarasuk specializes in children with behavioral problems and autism. All of them have a positive, upbeat, healing, and competent energy about them, and one or all of them will likely be contributing to one of my Pavia-Pothecary articles in the near future, so watch out for those as well. Here is their contact information in case any of you want it:
And if none of the above-listed doctors are conveniently located near you, you can search for an N.D. at the California Naturopathic Doctors Association web site.

NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER SPECIAL: GEARING UP FOR HOLIDAY STRESS
Here it is, that time of year again! The time of family gatherings and travel and eating and meeting deadlines before important holidays and buying gifts and hanging out with in-laws is back. While it is a joyful time of year, let's admit it: these can also be highly stressful times.
That's why we're offering Pavia newsletter members a little Soul Therapy this month. Because there is a limited staff that can provide Soul Therapy services, we usually do not offer these at Off-Peak prices, but we thought this month would be a good time to make an exception.

What can Soul Therapy address? Guided Meditation and Hypnotherapy can help you properly manage stress during these busy times. A little hypnotherapy can also come in handy if you feel you might be prone to overeating...imprinting at the cellular level that you will not go overboard could make a difference this year. Intuitive Tarot Readings can connect you with archetypal images depicting where you are on your personal journey. Finally, Dream Interpretation can help you uncover and decode the messages that your subconscious is trying to send you.
This November 2007, all Soul Therapy services can be experienced at 20% off...with the exception of Tarot Phone Readings, of course, which are ALREADY priced at Off-Peak prices. Call us at 408-741-1555 to book with Theresa Hatcher today!
TELL MARE WHAT YOU THINK
Thank you again to those of you who replied to my last question about the spa's cancellation policy. I asked you to weigh in on what you think a fair cancellation policy should be...and to tell you the truth, I was really surprised by your answers.
I was thinking that you would come back with some structured plan, or certain scenarios under which we could excuse clients for cancelling late. Well, every single one of you who responded said that our policy was more than fair, and that we should just stick to our guns. And what was stranger, you all thought it was okay to "lose" clients who didn't want to pay the cancellation fees. Wow! I always knew we were blessed with really great clients, but this takes the cake! Thank you.
Now, onto the next topic: picking one of my staff to reward with a spa day. I know I have a great staff, but I would like to know who always goes the extra mile to give excellent customer service. Because spa services are designed to be private, I can't know what goes on in the rooms, but you do. So, please write in and tell me about the one member of Pavia's staff who does the most to make you feel welcomed, cared for, and cared about (shoot, I had to end that sentence in a preposition). Based on your responses, I will choose one lucky staff member to have the Superwoman's Revenge package at Pavia.

Here is what I want you to tell me: the name of the staff member you are nominating (and you can pick anyone you want, from the spa coordinators to our Soul Therapists), a few sentences about how they have gone the distance to give you extra-special customer service, and the reason why you think they deserve a spa day above and beyond anyone else. I will announce the winning staff member in the next edition of the newsletter.
As always, I truly appreciate your opinions (and so will a lucky member of my staff)!
REFERRAL PROGRAM
When you pay us the compliment of referring your friends to Pavia, we will express our appreciation for this gesture by sending you a $20 spa credit (good for 6 months) for each friend or family member you refer (make sure they mention your name when they come). You can then save them up for a nice spa treatment for yourself!
SPA FINDER & SPAWISH POLICY
We are happy to take Spa Finder and SpaWish cards as payment for services and products at Pavia Day Spa, but we cannot combine them with product discounts and specials any longer. The nature of the Spa Finder/SpaWish program is such that we must accept a significant discount on the services/products to begin with, and then to combine that with any of our corporate, series, rebooking, birthday, or newsletter discounts would greatly injure our business.
Therefore, SpaFinder and SpaWish cards will only be accepted as payment for full-price services and products at Pavia. Thank you for your understanding.
Here's wishing you a peaceful November 2007!
Sincerely,
Mare |
